Gilbert & George

Popped out for a quick sandwich a bit earlier and bumped into Gilbert and George by Spitalfields. They didn't look too pleased to see me, but everything they do is Art!

Gilbert & George began working together in 1967 when they met at St Martins School of Art, and from the beginning, in their films and ‘living sculpture’ they appeared as figures in their own work. Gilbert & George believe that everything is potential subject matter for their work, and they have always addressed social issues, taboos and artistic conventions. Implicit in their work is the idea that an artist’s sacrifice and personal investment is a necessary condition of art.

Anyway, amazing to see such wonderfully talented artists in the flesh. Inspiration.

Cold Snap, Night Drawing in, Views From my Floor

Jogged home this evening 12.8 miles -so waited a while for the rush hour pavement to clear a path for my tippy-toes... Almost empty office past 6:30pm. Night is drawing closer -nice colours in the sky -blues, turquoise, purples, greys, some orange, white, but cold with it. Bit of inward reflection on the glass and views of Spital Fields toward the East and West to the Guerkin, 30 St Mary Axe in the City of London(Baltic Exchange) -could pretend that's some experimental Photoshop layering, but won't. Images captured again with my new Blackberry. Should be interesting as that time turns black. Quite nice jogging home, much better than getting the train -need to sort out my iTunes.

Views from my floor

Not much time for life drawing of late -busy with client work and script writing. Though, looking to amend this situation on Friday. After losing my phone last Friday (I don't know how), I've got a super new one! and the camera function is pretty kooL too. Some snappy shots here of the views from the office and the last from the pavement on Bishopsgate. The re-development of the area is fantastic and soon I will take a decent camera with me on my working journey and take some excellent shots and post back here again. Buildings in the distance that you can see include Canary Wharf -hiding in the clouds on the horizon, Baltic Exchange, Spitalfields, Broadgate and The Lloyd’s Building etc,..

Richmond Life Drawing Session #...

Nice one hour pose by the model here -a lady of a certain age... a dancers body, well toned and the most interesting face. Not too much time to get all that detail in with fine liner pens, but I'm very pleased with the result and lovely textured paper. Might hopefully get another chance to draw or paint this model sometime soon.

Richmond Session Part One

This is the first part of the Richmond series of drawings under the influence of Gabriela Schutz. Back to pencil here with these short poses. For some time my sketches have been quite linear -heavy lines, hatching, usually with fine line pen or biro. Now trying to focus more on shadow and shapes/tones of the body -becoming less of the natural graphic designers mark making and more of a story of fine art. The relationship between shadow, tone and shape will be explored in my upcoming drawings and paintings...

biro splashing in Soho

The Tracey Emin (No Substitute For Your Love (2003)) that fell on my head over Easter has really knocked out a few precious brain cells... just not in the mood to draw right now. The theme again in Soho was Burlesque -I'm just not hot on this... anyway, did some scribbles, splashed some felt tips and dropped my tippex like Jackson Pollock. End result was fun, but not too impressive. I'm going to rest for a few days and sort my head out -at least the Tracey Emin is going up in value nicely, just a shame it's in such a heavy frame.

Easter Monday sketching after Mexican beer

I wasn't in the right frame of mind to draw this evening... probably something to do with drinking too much Mexican beer in the afternoon and then switching to Peroni. Regardless, it was a very enjoyable session again at the Old Crown and a great bunch of people to draw with -good conversation and a little French practice. This was a one hour pose -I was very slow, no concentration... The model is muscular/toned but feminine -a former dancer and very good to draw. I'll be drawing again tomorrow in Soho... I'm feeling that tonight's session was wasted, because I was... and I should be in a better mood for it after spending the day with a client.

Here is a link to something interesting in relation to life drawing: http://www.artinfo.com/news/story/31083/new-art-show-planned-for-britains-channel-4/

Sketching in Soho

A great evening of drawing last night at the Zebrano on Greek Street, Soho. The theme was Burlesque with two models and was very different to standard life drawing -which was nice.

As usual I was armed with my sketch book and the usual black biro, plus a few fine liners. It was a great atmosphere in the bar, good 90's music and a few Peroni's. The camera crew filming us was a little off putting, especially the close-ups of me sketching -those were really bad drawings, I hope they get edited out in the final cut.

The two sketches here show each model... small drawings, quick pen work.

30 minute Sketch from tonight at the Old Crown

The main spot lights somehow blew a fuse, so the room was pretty dark... had two small spot lights focused on the model -this created extra shadow that actually looked okay. Put biro to paper 5 minutes into this pose with some light marks and progressed to heavier strokes and coloured pen, plus cross contouring and hatching,

I'm quite pleased with this quick sketch, but would have been better to draw this pose over the space of an hour or two. This model is excellent.
